Modems - Communications

Question: How do I check or change my computer's DNS settings?

Checking and updating your computer's DNS settings is usually very simple. In almost all cases the computer should be set to automatically receive this information from HiWAAY when you connect. Setting this to automatic means you'll never have to worry about making these changes again.

Below are a series of steps to follow to make sure your computer is up-to-date. Just select the steps for your system and follow them in order. If your computer's operating system is not listed or if you have any questions, please call HiWAAY Support at (256) 533-4296 the press 1 or toll free at (888) 244-9229 and press 1. We'll be happy to help you check your configuration and make changes if necessary.

Windows 95
  1. Double-click "My Computer".
  2. Double-click "Dial-up networking".
  3. Right click the "HiWAAY" connection icon and choose "Properties".
  4. Click the "Server Types" tab.
  5. Click the "TCP/IP" button.
  6. Select "Server assigned IP Address" and "Server assigned name server addresses".
  7. Click "OK" and then click "OK" again and restart your computer.


Windows 98
  1. Double-click "My Computer".
  2. Double-click "Dial-up Networking".
  3. Right click the "HiWAAY" connection icon and choose "Properties".
  4. Click the "Server Types" tab.
  5. Click the "TCP/IP" button.
  6. Select "Server assigned IP Address" and "Server assigned name server addresses".
  7. Click "OK" and then click "OK" again and restart your computer.


Windows ME
  1. Double-click "My Computer".
  2. Double-click "Control Panel".
  3. Double-clcik "Dial-up Networking".
  4. Right click the "HiWAAY" connection icon and choose "Properties".
  5. Click the "Networking" tab.
  6. Click the "TCP/IP Settings" button.
  7. Select "Server assigned IP Address" and "Server assigned name server addresses".
  8. Click "OK" and then click "OK" again and restart your computer.


Windows 2000
  1. Click on "Start" button and select "Settings" then choose "Network and Dial-up Connections".
  2. Right click on the HiWAAY connection icon and select "Properties".
  3. Click the "Networking" tab.
  4. Click the "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" line.
  5. Click the "Properties" button.
  6. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically and "Obtain DNS server automatically".
  7. Click "OK" and then click "OK" again and restart your computer.


Windows XP
  1. Click the "Start" button and select "Control Panel".
  2. Double-click "Network Connections".
  3. Right click the HiWAAY connection line or icon and select "Properties".
  4. Click the "Networking" tab.
  5. Click the "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)" line.
  6. Click the "Properties" button.
  7. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
  8. Click "OK" and then click "OK" again and restart your computer.


Macintosh OS 8.5, 8.6 and 9.x
  1. Click on the Apple Menu and selct "Control Panels" and choose "TCP/IP".
  2. Set "Configure" to "Using PPP Server".
  3. Quit TCP/IP and click "Save" when prompted to "Save changes to the current configuration?"


Macintosh OS X 10.1 and higher
  1. Click the Apples Menu and select "System Preferences".
  2. Click the "Network" icon.
  3. Under the "Show:" pull-down list select "Internal Modem".
  4. Click the "TCP/IP" tab.
  5. Set "Configure:" to "Using PPP".
  6. Click "Apply Now" and quit System Preferneces.
