Question: Which Version of PPP/TCP Do I Need to Connect My Mac to HiWAAY?

Answer:

If you're using Mac OS X or Mac OS 8.0 or higher, then you can ignore the rest of this because you already have everything you need to get online.

In addition to a version of TCP (either MacTCP or Open Transport will do just fine ) you'll have to have some flavor of PPP to connect to HiWAAY.

Let's tackle the PPP question first:

There are lots of different PPP versions floating around the Net and included with bargain table copies of last year's Internet via Mac books. The choice is pretty simple though. The only two you need to consider are freePPP 2.5 and the much older MacPPP 2.0.1. Here's how to decide on which one:

If your operating system is 7.0.1. (see the Mac OS note) or earlier or if your Mac has a Black and White screen (like a MacPlus) then you should use MacPPP 2.0.1

If you're running system 7.1 (see the Mac OS note) or higher or using Open Transport then you should use FreePPP 2.5 or higher.

If you're not sure what version of the Mac operating system you're running then click on the Apple menu and choose "About this Macintosh" or "About this Computer" with new systems. You'll get a small window that includes the Mac System version.

Now let's look at the TCP stuff:
First off, either MacTCP or Open Transport will work fine with HiWAAY. Let's see if you already have one or the other installed on your Mac. Open your "Control Panels" folder. If you see an item named TCP/IP then you're running Open Transport. If you have MacTCP then you're not running Open Transport.

If you don't have either, then you should install MacTCP.
